Can osteopathy relieve a sciatica attack?

Sciatica is an intense pain, often located on one side only, along the sciatic nerve (buttock and/or back thigh and/or calf and/or heel).

It can be accompanied by numbness (paresthesias) and loss of sensitivity: consult your general practitioner. I wait for the green light from the latter to treat. If it is isolated and punctual, osteo treatment is possible in first intention. I avoid as much as possible structural techniques (cracking) which, in my opinion, if the region is very inflamed, risk freezing the muscles and increasing the pain. A sciatica can have as origin a herniated disc. This would therefore be dangerous and ineffective. We will work via osteo-functional or myotensive techniques (muscles, joints, ligaments, viscera). And yes, the intestines can accentuate back pain.

If you have recurrent sciatica, additional tests are necessary. Sometimes, in this case, orthopedic inserts, a complementary treatment with a physiotherapist, can help to avoid the chronicity of the crises. At the osteopathic practice in Paris 16, we work as a team with a network of health professionals. The goal is to relieve you as quickly and as well as possible.
